This unit aims to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and competencies to guide their future practice in accordance with eithical and professional principles and practice that form the foundation of safe and competent practice in the health sector.

AEM 102 Describe the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology (Specialized) (4-2-6)

This unit aims to provide learners with the basic applied knowledge of structure and function of the human body.

Prerequisites: AEM 101

AEM 103 Demonstrate Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Technician 1 (Theory) (4-0-4)

This unit aims to provide learners with the fundamental knowledge to assess, diagnose and manage patients at a basic life support level by offering the student theory sessions to cement fundamental knowledge of emergency medical care.

AEM 104 Demonstrate pre-hospital Emergency Medical Technician I (Practice) (0-4-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the fundamental application to assess, diagnose and manage patients at a basic life support level by offering the student hands on practical sessions.

AEM 105 Use Pharmacology for Emergency Medical Technician I (2-2-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the fundamental knowledge of pharmacology focusing on pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and basic drug classification for medications administered by an EMT as per the scope of practice.

AEM 106 Apply clinical skills (0-4-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the fundamental clinical practice at an EMT level using simulation and objective structured clinical exams (OSCE) to prepare and continue practicing skills and clinical decision-making for real-world application.

AEM 107 Apply pre-hospital trauma life support (1-2-3)

This course aims to provide learners with the fundamental knowledge, hands-on training and critical thinking that will improve patient’s survival due to trauma related injuries.

AEM 108 Describe the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology 1 (2-1-3)

This unit provides learners with the knowledge and skills needed to apply knowledge in human body structure and function

AEM 109 Describe the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology 2 (2-1-3)

This course continues the study of human anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on understanding the structure and function of the human body and its complex interactions. It deepens students’ knowledge of how body systems work together to maintain homeostasis and supports the application of this understanding to health, disease, and emergency care contexts. Learning is achieved through lectures, tutorials, and interactive activities designed to integrate theory with practical relevance to healthcare practice.

AEM 110 Apply Basic CPR & First Aid (1-1-2)

This course introduces the learner to basic CPR and selected first aid skills. On completion of this course the learner should have the knowledge & skills required to competently self-initiate basic CPR & first aid in the community and prehospital settings.

AEM 111 Apply pre-hospital emergency medical technician (3-1-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to competently describe the basic pre-hospital emergency care principles necessary to assess, diagnose and manage ill and injured patients as per the latest evidence-based medicine and EMT scope of practice.

AEM 112 Perform pre-hospital emergency medical technician (2-2-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to competently demonstrate the basic pre-hospital emergency care necessary to assess, diagnose and treat ill and injured patients as per the clinical practice guidelines (CPG) and scope of practice. Students will focus on the applying these skills through face-to-face lectures, objective structured clinical exams (OSCE), and patient care simulations to prepare students for real world patient application.

AEM 140 Describe the fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology 3 (2-1-3)

This course examines the structure and function of the endocrine, cardiovascular, blood, lymphatic, and immune systems. It develops students’ understanding of how these systems work together to maintain homeostasis and protect the body. Learning is delivered through face-to-face classes held twice a week, using interactive presentations, in-class activities, and guided tasks. By the end, students will be able to describe these systems and explain their roles in circulation, immunity, and overall health, providing a strong foundation for advanced anatomy, physiology, and clinical practice.

AEM 141 Describe the fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology 4 (2-1-3)

This course explores the structure and function of the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. It develops students’ understanding of how these systems contribute to essential body processes such as gas exchange, nutrient absorption, waste elimination, and reproduction. Classes are delivered face-to-face twice a week and use interactive presentations, in-class activities, and guided tasks.

AEM 200 Apply emergency care in the pre-hospital setting for paramedics (2-2-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to competently manage medical emergencies as per the paramedic scope of practice in a classroom & simulated emergency setting. Students will focus on applying these skills through face-to-face lectures, objective structured clinical exams (OSCE), and patient care simulations to prepare students for real-world patient application.

AEM 201 Describe Pre-hospital Pharmacology for Paramedics (2-2-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to competently describe the pharmacology used by paramedics as per the scope of practice. Students will focus on the drug classifications, indications, contraindications and dosages for medications administered by a Paramedic, as per the scope of practice.

AEM 202 Apply emergency medical services preparation and response for disaster & mass casualty incidents (2-1-3)

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to competently apply procedures required for the emergency preparation and response to disasters and mass casualty incidents as they occur in the pre-hospital setting.

AEM 203 Demonstrate emergency care in the pre-hospital setting for paramedics (2-2-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to competently demonstrate advanced pre-hospital emergency care necessary to asses, diagnose and treat ill and injured patients as per the latest evidence based medicine and scope of practice for the pre-hospital setting.

AEM 204 Apply obstetric and paediatric emergency management in the pre-hospital setting (0-4-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the skills required to competently apply pre-hospital emergency care techniques necessary to assess, diagnose and manage obstetric and paediatric emergencies as per the latest evidence-based medicine and scope of practice.

AEM 205 Describe Obstetric & Pediatric Emergencies in the Prehospital Setting (4-0-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to competently describe advanced pre-hospital emergency care principles necessary to assess, diagnose and manage obstetric and paediatric emergencies as per the latest evidence-based medicine and scope of practice for the pre-hospital setting.

AEM 206 Apply Emergency Medical Dispatching in Emergency Medical Services (2-1-3)

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to competently describe Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Dispatching Operations, required to identify the emergency type and priority, effectively communicate with callers and responders, and provide life-saving assistance in a professional manner over the phone until the EMS response units arrive on scene.

AEM 207 Describe a Community Paramedicine Project (3-0-3)

This module is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct community paramedicine project within their community, utilizing their role as advanced emergency medical technicians. Advanced emergency medical technicians play a vital role in promoting health and wellness as they are uniquely positioned directly within the community. This module will empower students to identify health needs in their community, develop a community health project, and effectively communicate and collaborate with stakeholders to make a positive impact.

AEM 208 Perform obstetric and pediatric emergency management in the pre-hospital setting (0-4-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the skills required to competently apply pre-hospital emergency care techniques necessary to assess, diagnose and manage obstetric and paediatric emergencies as per the latest evidence-based medicine and scope of practice.

This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge required to competently describe advanced pre-hospital emergency care principles necessary to assess, diagnose and manage obstetric and paediatric emergencies as per the latest evidence-based medicine and scope of practice for the pre-hospital setting.

This module aims to provide learners with the opportunity to observe and practice their clinical skills and techniques as per the EMT scope of practice, in the real-world and thus gain exposure and experience to real challenges and clinical decision-making. Students will enhance their clinical skills, adapt to clinical challenges and thus prepare students for real-world cases in Emergency Medical Services.

AEM 231 Apply Clinical Practicum 2 (Hosp) (0-12-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the opportunity to observe and practice their clinical skills and techniques as per the EMT scope of practice, in the real-world and thus gain exposure and experience to real challenges and clinical decision-making. Students will enhance their clinical skills, adapt to clinical challenges and thus prepare students for real-world cases in while attending shift in the emergency departments of a hospital.

AEM 232 Apply clinical practicum 3 (Amb) (0-12-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the opportunity to observe and practice their clinical skills and techniques as per the paramedic scope of practice in the real-world and thus gain exposure and experience to real challenges and clinical decision-making. Students will enhance their clinical skills, adapt to clinical challenges and thus prepare students for real-world cases in Emergency Medical Services.

AEM 233 Apply clinical practicum 4 (Hosp) (0-12-4)

This module aims to provide learners with the opportunity to observe and practice their clinical skills and techniques as per the paramedic scope of practice, in the real-world and thus gain exposure and experience to real challenges and clinical decision-making. Students will enhance their clinical skills, adapt to clinical challenges and thus prepare students for real-world cases in while attending shift in the emergency departments, wards and operating theatres of a hospital.
