HEM 1012 Fundamentals of Paramedic Practice (2-0-2)
This course introduces foundational knowledge and skills required for professional paramedic practice in the UAE. It covers EMS systems, operations, ethics, professionalism, and communication practices. Emphasis is placed on reflective practice, personal and professional well-being, and sustainability in healthcare delivery. Students will explore ethical decision-making, regulatory standards, and interprofessional collaboration through case-based learning and simulated interactions. The course supports the development of communication, leadership, and documentation skills.
HEM 1013 Anatomy for EMS (2-2-3)
This course introduces student paramedics to the structure of the human body through surface and gross anatomy. Learners will use a digital platform to identify key anatomical structures, apply accurate terminology, and describe where structures are located in the body. With a focus on clinically relevant anatomy, students will also engage in simulated paramedic practice to apply their anatomical knowledge to realistic case scenarios, laying a strong foundation for future study in physiology and pathophysiology.
HEM 1021 EMS Clinical Integration Lab I (0-2-1)
This course is an introductory lab course focusing on the essential preparation skills for the Basic Life Support level of practice. Students will practice packing and organizing the jump-bags, ambulance simulator, in terms of equipping and preparing the ambulance for service. Ensuring the equipment readiness to support safe and effective prehospital care.
HEM 1023 Physiology for EMS (2-0-3)
This course provides a comprehensive study of the functions of the human body, emphasizing their relevance to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The students will explore the functions of major body systems, understanding how these systems interrelate and how disorders can affect them. At the end of the course, students should be competent in describing physiological processes, crucial for the treatment of the critically ill and injured patients in prehospital care settings.

HEM 1123 Prehospital Emergency Care – Theory I (3-0-3)
Upon completion of this course, learners will be able to accurately and efficiently recall a systematic patient assessment model to identify and treat key life-threatening emergencies to the level of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic). Learners will be able to formulate appropriate, basic-level treatment plans and interventions in line with international Basic Life Support standards. Including common medical emergencies such as Asthma, Hypoglycemia, and Cardiac Arrest. Also covering common trauma emergencies such as life-threatening bleeding, wounds, and suspected fractures.

HEM 1223 Pre-hospital Emergency Care – Practice I (0-6-3)
This course enables students to demonstrate EMT-B level competencies by performing systematic patient assessment, identifying life-threatening emergencies, and applying basic treatment interventions for common medical and trauma conditions in alignment with international Basic Life Support standards. Competency is demonstrated through practical sessions, OSCEs, and scenario-based vignettes.

HEM 2031 EMS Clinical and Operational Readiness II (0-2-1)
This course builds on foundational competencies to develop advanced EMS operational readiness in dynamic prehospital environments. Students demonstrate enhanced physical fitness, perform safe patient movement, and apply clinical and basic pharmacological knowledge in simulated scenarios. The course emphasizes the integration of clinical skills and operational decision-making through practical assessments and scenario-based simulations reflective of real-world EMS practice.

HEM 2032 Emergency Services Dispatching (2-0-2)
This course introduces learners to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Dispatching Operations. Learners will be required to identify the emergency type and priority, and to effectively communicate with callers and responders. They will be required to provide life-saving assistance in a professional manner over the phone until the EMS response units arrive on scene.
HEM 2041 EMS Clinical and Operational Readiness III (0-2-1)
This course is a lab-based course focusing on the essential preparation skills for the paramedic level of practice. Students will practice integrating emergency care theory, and practice related to trauma emergencies and patient packaging. They will also apply prehospital management in emergency obstetric and pediatric emergencies. Combining theory and practice in one lab-based setting.
HEM 2042 Disaster & Mass Incident Management (2-0-2)
This course introduces learners to disasters and mass casualty incident management. Learners will be able to discuss and apply procedures required for the emergency preparation and response to disasters and mass casualty incidents as they occur in the prehospital setting. They will be able to undertake risk assessment and apply an all-hazards approach to a disaster or MCI event.
HEM 2043 Applied Pharmacology I (2-2-3)
Provides an introduction into basic concepts and fundamentals of applied pharmacology within the prehospital emergency care context. Focuses on the basic drug classification and concepts with special consideration to Emergency Medical Care. This subject requires you to link your understanding of physiology, pathophysiology and emergency medical care to the administration of medications within a defined scope of practice. Each of the medications that are administered by emergency care practitioners within the UAE are dealt with at an introductory level based on the relevant scope of practice.

HEM 2133 Prehospital Emergency Care – Medical Theory II (3-0-3)
Introduces theoretical knowledge to provide medical care to ill patients in the prehospital emergency care setting at a paramedic level. Students will have the opportunity to solve a wide range of medical and other non-traumatic cases for all patient populations at the specified paramedic scope of practice.

HEM 2142 Gynecological, Obstetric & Pediatric Emergencies (1-2-2)
This course introduces the learner to gynecological, obstetric, and pediatric emergencies presenting in the prehospital setting at a paramedic level. The learner will be required to identify common gynecological disorders as well as recognize and manage obstetric emergencies related to childbirth, maternal resuscitation, and pediatric medical and trauma-related emergencies.
HEM 2143 Prehospital Emergency Care – Trauma Theory II (3-0-3)
Provides the necessary theoretical knowledge to provide emergency care to patients in the prehospital setting. A wide range of traumatic pathologies be presented at the paramedic level in the scope of emergency medicine. In addition it Caters for special populations and contemporary epidemiology.
HEM 2233 Prehospital Emergency Care – Medical Practice II (0-6-3)
This course will equip learners with the necessary skills to practice at a paramedic level. The course will include both OSCEs and vignettes, that will incorporate intermediate clinical integration skills. Students will be introduced to a range of medical and other non-traumatic cases for all patient populations. They will be required to treat medical emergencies at a paramedic scope of practice.

HEM 2243 Prehospital Emergency Care – Trauma Practice II (0-6-3)
Demonstrate the skills and competencies required to manage trauma patients in the prehospital emergency care setting. A wide range of traumatic pathologies will be presented within the paramedic scope of practice. In addition, it caters to special populations.
HEM 2943 Ambulance Preceptorship I (0-12-3)
Integrate knowledge, skills and competencies learned in the classroom and clinical lab, and apply to real and or simulated patients for the in-hospital and immersive environment. Students will have the opportunity to attend shifts in various hospital departments and apply patient management at the relevant paramedic scope of practice under supervision.
HEM 3023 Applied Pharmacology II (2-2-3)
Incorporate evidence-based medicine into current knowledge and practice of applied pharmacology. Students will have the opportunity to interrogate concepts of best practice and legislation, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapy, drug classifications and calculations within the Advanced Paramedic scope of practice.

HEM 3053 Community Health & Remote Paramedicine (2-0-3)
Learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges and responsibilities of paramedics working in rural, remote, and underserved areas. The course will cover topics such as health promotion, disease prevention, and public health surveillance, all viewed through the lens of a paramedic's scope of practice. Learners will also function as autonomous practitioners, effectively managing resources, collaborating with local health networks, and providing compassionate, culturally sensitive care that meets the specific needs of the community.
HEM 3062 EMS Advanced Clinical Integration Lab II (0-4-2)
This course is a lab-based course focusing on the critical integration of advanced paramedic knowledge and skills to practice as an advanced paramedic. Learners will practice integrating advanced obstetric and neonatal emergency care and associated advanced pharmacology. They will also engage in Advanced Pediatric Life Support principles and practices. Combining theory and practice in one lab-based setting.
HEM 3153 Advanced Prehospital Emergency Care Theory (3-0-3)
This course requires learners to integrate medical and trauma knowledge to diagnose and outline patient management strategies for patients in need of advanced life support measures. Students will have the opportunity to apply clinical reasoning that underpins the management of critically ill or injured patients across the lifespan.
HEM 3162 Mental Health Emergencies & Crisis Intervention (2-0-2)
This course is designed to equip learners with the essential knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and manage mental health emergencies and crises in the prehospital setting, while also emphasizing paramedic self-care. Students will explore a range of mental health disorders as well as both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The course emphasizes a patient-centered, de-escalation-focused approach, preparing students to navigate complex and sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
HEM 3163 Advanced Obstetrics & Neonatology Emergency Care (2-2-3)
This course prepares learners to manage high-acuity obstetric and neonatal emergencies. Learners will focus on advanced maternal and fetal pathophysiology, resuscitation, and critical interventions. Emphasis will be on mastering skills to manage complicated deliveries and perform advanced neonatal care, ensuring learners can optimize outcomes for both mother and infant in a time-sensitive, prehospital setting.

HEM 3253 Advanced Prehospital Emergency Care Practice (0-6-3)
This course requires learners to integrate medical and trauma skills to diagnose and apply patient management strategies for patients in need of advanced life support measures. HEM 3263 Advanced Pediatric Emergency Care (2-2-3)
This course prepares learners for the unique challenges of pediatric emergencies. The course prioritizes evidence-based practice to ensure students can provide compassionate and effective care in the prehospital setting.
HEM 3933 Hospital Preceptorship II (0-12-3)
Integrate knowledge, skills, and competencies learned in the classroom and clinical lab with real and immersive patients in the prehospital environment. Students will have the opportunity to attend hospital shifts in the clinical environment where they will apply patient management techniques and relevant scope of practice under supervision, and with real patients in the clinical, and simulated environment.
HEM 3943 Ambulance Preceptorship II (0-12-3)
Integrate knowledge, skills and competencies learned in the classroom and clinical lab, and apply to real and simulated patients in the authentic and immersive created pre-hospital environment. Learners will have the opportunity to attend ambulance shifts where they will observe and apply patient management techniques and relevant scope of practice under supervision at an advanced paramedic level.
HEM 4023 EMS Leadership & Quality Improvement (3-0-3)
This course develops the leadership and quality improvement competencies essential for advanced paramedics. It focuses on the multifaceted roles paramedics play within the EMS system, moving beyond patient care to include leading teams, managing resources, and driving positive change. The curriculum emphasizes applying quality improvement (QI) methodologies to enhance patient safety and optimize system performance, preparing students to promote accountability and sustainable, high-quality prehospital care.
HEM 4073 Research Methods for EMS (2-0-3)
This course introduces learners to research methods and evidence-based practice. Learners will cover basic research designs, ethical considerations and will be able to appraise and synthesize literature to inform research. During this process, learners will be required to develop a research proposal and data collection tool. It includes the application of the developed theoretical background to a capstone research project.
HEM 4076 Specialized Transport & Rescue Practices for EMS (4-4-6)
This course introduces advanced paramedics to the evidence-based management of specialized patient populations. Learners will apply reflective and critical thinking processes to develop comprehensive care plans for complex patients in a variety of settings. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of specialized knowledge into advanced patient transport, including aeromedical care and rescue principles, preparing students to navigate and solve complex clinical scenarios in challenging and dynamic environments.
HEM 4083 Capstone Research Project for EMS (2-0-3)
This course allows learners to conduct a comprehensive research project relevant to prehospital emergency care. Students will execute all phases of a research study, including producing an extensive literature review, collecting and analyzing data, followed by a final capstone report and presentation. This experience transitions students from consumers of research to producers, enabling them to contribute new evidence to the evolving body of paramedic practice.
HEM 4084 Advanced Paramedic Case Studies & Critical Care (3-0-4)
This course focuses on critical analysis and reflection through the discussion of complex, high-acuity case studies. Students will engage in collaborative learning to dissect patient presentations, evaluate management decisions, and apply evidence-based practices to improve clinical outcomes. The course emphasizes an open, peer-to-peer learning environment where learners can articulate and defend their clinical reasoning, challenging one another to refine their skills in critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning, and ethical decision-making in a critical care setting.
HEM 4106 Prehospital Critical Care and Transport (4-4-6)
Introduces evidence based knowledge and reflective processes to improve the quality of patient care through advanced management plans for specialized patients. Students will have the opportunity to solve complex patient scenarios in the intensive care setting.

HEM 4933 Responder Preceptorship I (0-12-3)
Integrate knowledge, skills and competencies learned in the classroom and clinical lab with real and simulated patients in the authentic and immersive created pre-hospital environment. Students will have the opportunity to attend responder shifts where they will observe and apply patient management techniques and relevant scope of practice under supervision, at an advanced paramedic level.
HEM 4936 Responder Preceptorship II (0-24-6)
Learners will have the opportunity to attend responder shifts where they will observe and apply patient management techniques and relevant scope of practice under supervision, at an advanced paramedic level. Learners will spend 2 days per week in the industry working with an advanced care paramedic in an ambulance or response vehicle.
