HML 1013 Human Biology (3-0-3)

An introduction of the basic concepts of Human Biology by offering the student an insight and understanding of the interrelationships of the various parts of the human body from the cellular level to the whole organism. It provides a foundation for further related and more specialized studies.

HML 1023 Medical Terminology (3-0-3)

Covers basic medical terminology beginning with prefixes, suffixes and word roots used in medical and health care language. Develops knowledge by identifying, analyzing, defining, spelling and pronouncing terms and learning abbreviations related to each of the body systems, as well as the basic introductory principles of drug administration routes and drug classifications.

HML 1033 Work Health and Safety (3-0-3)

Introduces health sciences students in their first year of study to concepts related to health and safety practices in the work place. It identifies the common workplace hazards and risks and highlights the major principles of controlling, preventing and managing hazards and risks in the workplace with emphasis on health care settings.

HML 1113 Anatomy and Physiology (3-0-3)

Designed to build upon concepts covered in the Human Biology course. The aim is to extend the students understanding of the workings of the body systems and the communication processes required to coordinate their activities. Topics covered will be the structure and function of the following systems: endocrine, nervous, integumentary, cardiovascular and respiratory, immune, urinary and reproductive.

HML 1123 Chemistry for Health Sciences (3-0-3)

This introductory course in Chemistry aims to provide a solid foundation in the fundamental principles essential for understanding health-related interdisciplinary sciences. The course covers a range of topics including: the classification of materials, subatomic and atomic properties, structure and chemical bonding, chemical nomenclature, chemical quantities and reactions and the analysis of the properties of solutions. Additionally, the course includes a chemistry lab component where students will conduct hands-on experiments to reinforce the theoretical concepts learned in lectures.

HML 2053 Immunology (2-2-3)

In this course students will study how the immune system defends the body against attack by microorganisms and parasites, how it discriminates between self and nonself, how it deals with foreign molecues, and how it recognises and deals with neoplastic and virally transformed cells as well as transplanted organs, cells and proteins. Immunological procedures will be introduced as the basis of many hematological, microbiological, biochemical and histopathological tests.

HML 2233 Clinical Preceptorship I (0-36-3)

Students under the supervision of professional medical laboratory technologists observe and perform routine and specialized medical laboratory procedures, and analysis of laboratory data. Competence levels in medical laboratory procedures are set at the appropriate standard for third year students and teaching, assessment, and evaluation are reflective of the indicated standard.

HML 2301 Clinical Hematology I Lab (0-2-1)

This course provides competency-based practical training co-designed with industry partners and aligned with HML 2303 – Clinical Hematology I. Students develop competencies in phlebotomy, laboratory safety, infection control, quality assurance, ethical practice, responsible AI use, and sustainable laboratory practices. Through supervised laboratory activities, students demonstrates competency in routine hematology investigations, prepare and examine peripheral blood films, operate automated hematology analyzers, and interpret CBC and microscopic findings associated with common anemia patterns.

HML 2303 Clinical Hematology I (3-0-3)

This course introduces the essential concepts of clinical hematology. It explains how blood cells are formed, how red blood cells develop and function, and how hemoglobin, iron, red cell enzymes, and cell membranes support normal red cell activity. The course also develops students’ ability to interpret red blood cell indices, peripheral blood smear findings, and related laboratory results. These skills are applied to the recognition and differentiation of common red blood cell disorders, including microcytic, macrocytic, and normocytic (hemolytic) anemias.

HML 2311 Clinical Hematology II Lab (0-2-1)

Students will perform lab investigation of the hemoglobinopathies and the importance of sickle cell disease and thalassemia. This is followed by a study of normal and abnormal WBC formation and is reinforced by viewing peripheral blood films and patient case studies in lab. Students will also apply the diagnostic applications of cell marker analysis, flow cytometry and HLA principal in the lab.

HML 2313 Clinical Hematology II (3-0-3)

Begins with instruction on the detection, diagnosis and investigation of the hemoglobinopathies and the importance of sickle cell disease and thalassemia in the UAE. This is followed by a study of normal and abnormal WBC formation and is reinforced by viewing peripheral blood films and patient case studies. Subjects explored include lab diagnosis of systemic and infectious diseases and many hematological malignancies. The diagnostic applications of cell marker analysis, flow cytometry, HLA system and stem cell transplantation will also be discussed.

HML 2401 Clinical Chemistry I Lab (0-2-1)

Clinical Chemistry I Laboratory is a practical course delivered alongside the Clinical Chemistry I theory course to reinforce key biochemical concepts through hands-on laboratory application. The course introduces laboratory safety, GLP, pipetting, specimen handling, preparation of solutions and calibration curves, spectrophotometry, LabCare software, carbohydrate analysis, kidney function testing, urinalysis, and electrolyte analysis. Emphasis is placed on quality control, analytical accuracy, biosafety, sustainability, innovation, and clinical interpretation of laboratory results.

HML 2403 Clinical Chemistry I (3-0-3)

Learning the foundations for the theoretical aspects of Clinical Chemistry is important to build on for the subsequent Clinical Chemistry II course. Identification of laboratory safety, mathematics, quality assurance, and analytical principles of basic clinical chemistry procedures are covered. At a novice level, an introduction to normal physiology and common pathologies are discussed and analysed. Theoretical learning is applied through manual techniques during HML 2043 Lab course, applying principles to the analysis of the chemical constituents of blood and other body fluids.

HML 2411 Clinical Chemistry II Lab (0-2-1)

Students will perform a range of manual techniques for clinical chemistry laboratory analysis to enhance the crucial skills sets required for working in a medical laboratory environment. Students will apply the principles of enzymology along with measurement techniques in lab. Students apply the techniques of the analytes for liver function tests, cardiac enzymes, acid-base balance and hCG in the lab.

HML 2413 Clinical Chemistry II (3-0-3)

HML 2501 Medical Microbiology Lab (0-2-1)

This course introduces laboratory safety in medical microbiology and the basic laboratory methods used to diagnose bacterial infections. Topics include preparation and sterilization of culture media, aseptic techniques, bacterial staining and identification, biochemical and serological testing, and quality control. Laboratory practical sessions highlight safe practices and the role of medical laboratory technologists in infectious disease management.

HML 2503 Medical Microbiology (3-0-3)

This course introduces core concepts in medical microbiology, including the classification, isolation, and identification of microorganisms, mechanisms of infection and disease transmission, pathogenicity, and host defense responses. It emphasizes principles of laboratory diagnosis of bacterial infections, prevention and control, safe working practices, and quality control. The course develops essential theoretical knowledge and professional competencies required for clinical laboratory practice, while practical skills are developed through a co-requisite laboratory course.

HML 2511 Systematic Bacteriology Lab (0-2-1)

Students will perform procedures and interpretation of microscopic, cultural, biochemical and serological techniques used in the isolation and identification of bacteria commonly encountered in the medical microbiology lab. There is continued instruction in the dangers of handling biohazardous clinical specimens and how to perform all tasks safely, following aseptic procedures in the lab. Performance and interpretation of antimicrobial susceptibility tests are also carried out in the lab.

HML 2513 Systematic Bacteriology (3-0-3)

Further identification and clinical correlations of bacteria encountered in clinical specimens follows on from Medical Microbiology; interpretation of microscopic, cultural, biochemical and serological techniques used in the isolation and identification of bacteria commonly encountered in the medical microbiology lab. HML 2601 Immunology Lab (0-2-1)

HML 2611 Histotechnology Lab (0-2-1)

Students will practice the anatomic pathology used in the investigation of disease and its processes, immunohistochemistry and quality assurance systems. Through laboratory practical's, the role of histochemistry in differentiating cellular diseases is clarified. Emphasis is placed on trouble-shooting methods and advanced techniques in laboratory tissue diagnosis.

HML 2613 Histotechnology (3-0-3)

This course introduces the principles of Anatomic pathology used in the investigation of disease and its processes, immunohistochemistry and quality assurance systems. Instruction concentrates on safe and good laboratory practices. The course introduces cell injury, tissue preservation, tissue processing, microtomy, tissue recognition and preparation of tissue samples for diagnosis. Emphasis is placed on trouble-shooting methods and advanced techniques in tissue diagnosis.

HML 3053 Laboratory Management (3-0-3)

This course introduces students to management principles in the hospital laboratory, with an emphasis on quality management and organizational performance. Students develop skills related to individual and team effectiveness, stakeholder engagement, and benchmarking against professional standards through group work, problem-solving, and role-playing activities. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to contribute effectively to management teams in clinical laboratory settings.

HML 3153 Laboratory Management (3-0-3)

Introduce students to the concepts of management in the hospital laboratory, and develop skills essential to quality management: individual performance; collective performance within unit of responsibility; and external stakeholders. Students recognize the requirements for good management, organizational excellence and monitoring to benchmark standards. The course will require students to participate in group work (management teams) and will involve problem-solving and role-playing.

HML 3301 Hemostasis Lab (0-2-1)

Students will carry out the practical tasks needed to differentiate and diagnose these disorders. The causes and clinical effects of thrombosis will be discussed and students will carry out the appropriate laboratory tests involved in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.

HML 3303 Hemostasis (3-0-3)

This course covers normal hemostasis and the roles and interactions of the blood vessels and platelets, as well as the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems. The inherited and acquired disorders of hemostasis will be explored and students will carry out the practical tasks needed to differentiate and diagnose these disorders. The causes and clinical effects of thrombosis will be discussed.

HML 3311 Transfusion Medicine Lab (0-2-1)

Explore various techniques in antigen-antibody reactions, inheritance and structure of blood group antigens. Reinforce by performing grouping techniques. Learn crossmatching and the detection and identification clinically significant antibodies and possible adverse effects of transfusion and methods to investigate reactions in the lab.

HML 3401 Parasitology, Virology, Mycology Lab (0-2-1)

In addition, students will assess and perform, as appropriate, the specimen collection and processing, microscopic, cultural and immunological techniques used in the isolation and identification of fungi and parasites.

HML 3403 Parasitology, Virology, Mycology (3-0-3)

Further identification and clinical correlations of bacteria encountered in clinical specimens follows on from Microbiology II course, mainly blood and body fluids. In addition, the course includes the study of parasitic, viral, fungal infections and their diagnosis. The student assesses and understand, as appropriate, the specimen collection and understand, microscopic, cultural and immunological techniques used in the isolation and identification of fungi and parasites

HML 3411 Applications in Molecular Diagnostics Lab (0-2-1)

Students will perform variety of current techniques in molecular biology, with a focus on analysis of nucleic acids: nucleic acid isolation , polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis. Students will become familiar with mechanisms, objectives, applicability and limitations of common molecular wet-lab methods.

HML 3413 Applications in Molecular Diagnostics (3-0-3)

Introduces a variety of current techniques in molecular biology, with a focus on analysis of nucleic acids: Polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis and blotting techniques, real-time PCR, microarrays, recombinant DNA technology, DNA sequencing and gene function analysis. Manipulation and analysis of gene expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems will be briefly described.

HML 3501 Clinical Biochemistry Lab (0-2-1)

Students will examine the inter-relationships between disease and clinical chemistry values along with related analytical techniques in lab. Laboratory exercises complement the concepts covered in the classroom. Various immunoassay techniques will also be performed in the lab.

HML 3503 Clinical Biochemistry (3-0-3)

Advanced topics include lipid metabolism and its relationship to cardiovascular disease; prostate disease; mineral metabolism; thyroid function; introduction to therapeutic drug monitoring; immunoassay methods, and ion selective electrodes. Students examine the inter-relationships between disease and clinical chemistry values along with related analytical techniques.

HML 3511 Cytotechnology Lab (0-2-1)

Students will learn population screening, collection and preparation of samples, staining cells for diagnosis and recognition in the lab. HML 4013 HML Capstone Project I (3-0-3)

Develops an understanding of the process of scientific inquiry. Quantitative and qualitative methods are covered. Emphasis is on developing a critical scientific approach to evaluating scientific literature, developing a research proposal and data collection tool. It includes the application of developed theoretical background to a capstone research project.

HML 4014 Clinical Correlations (4-0-4)

Designed to enhance problem solving skills by integrating the various streams of knowledge acquired in Microbiology, Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Transfusion Science, Immunology and Molecular diagnostics in the context of clinical case studies of patients. Emphasis is on the correlation of the lab data with pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of major disease categories. Competencies to be reinforced include leadership, critical thinking, communication, analytical skills, ethical issues, professionalism and the skills to work in a healthcare setting.

Utilize the research proposal developed to produce an extensive literature review, implement the ethical review processes, select appropriate methodology, collect and analyze data, and present conclusions in a final capstone report and presentation.

HML 4123 Pathology of Diseases (2-0-3)

Introduces the biological principles of human disease and the transition from health to disease. Synthesizes the biological (Physiological and biochemical) process underlying the clinical manifestations of disease and thereby bringing together material from a variety of sources. The clinical relevance and the laboratory investigation thereof, is stressed by the inclusion of relevant case studies, particularly those prevalent in the region.
