EPC - Practicum for Education (EPC)

EPC 1403 Practicum 1a (0-4-3)

Introduces the ‘Beginning Teaching’ phase of the program where students complete a 10-15 day practicum in an early childhood setting. During this placement they will observe, implement and reflect upon learning highlighted in the education and methodology strands of the program.

EPC 1903 Practicum 1b (0-4-3)

Develops further understanding of the 'Beginning Teaching' phase of the program. Student teachers complete a practicum over a 10-15 day period in an early childhood setting. Provides opportunities for students to apply strategies learned in corresponding courses under the direct supervision of a Mentor School Teacher and a Mentor College Teacher.

Prerequisites: EPC 1403 or EPC 1401

EPC 2403 Practicum 2a (0-4-3)

Develops competencies of the ‘Emerging Teaching’ phase of the program. Student teachers complete a practicum over a 12-18 day period during which coursework from corresponding courses will also be implemented. Builds on Practicum 1b and under the direct supervision of a school teacher. Enables student teachers to plan, deliver and reflect upon the efficacy of a minimum of three, paired or individual complete teaching sessions with an entire class.

Prerequisites: EPC 1903 or EPC 1901

EPC 2903 Practicum 2b (0-4-3)

Develops further skills in relation to the "Emerging Teaching" phase of the program. Student teachers complete a practicum over a 12-18 day period in an early childhood setting. Under the guidance and supervision of a Mentor School Teacher, applies strategies learned in corresponding courses, teaches a minimum of three individual lessons to an entire class including the following lesson parts: start, middle and closing.

Prerequisites: EPC 2403 or EPC 2401

EPC 3403 Practicum 3a (0-4-3)

Develops competencies for the ‘Sustained Teaching’ phase. Student teachers complete a practicum over 15-20 days in which coursework from corresponding courses is also implemented in an early childhood setting. Building on Practicum 2b, with mentor support, students will plan, deliver and reflect upon the efficacy of a minimum of 7, complete teaching sessions with an entire class. This includes 4 connected sessions in which students will apply formative assessment, personal reflection and critical feedback to inform future planning.

Prerequisites: EPC 2901 or EPC 2903

EPC 3903 Practicum 3b (0-4-3)

Continues to develop competencies for the ‘Sustained Teaching’ phase of the program. Students complete a practicum over a 15-20 day in an early childhood setting. With mentor support, and learned strategies in corresponding courses, students will plan, deliver and reflect upon the efficacy of a minimum of 10 complete teaching sessions with an entire class. This includes 4 connected sessions in which students will use formative and summative assessments, with a focus on developing personal reflection and critical feedback in order to inform future planning.

EPC 4406 Practicum 4a (0-4-6)

Analyzes understandings of reflective practice through the development of a professional development plan that students implement throughout the 6-week teaching practice based on the six competencies of teaching. Contributes, through reflective discussions, to students writing an initial teaching philosophy statement for presentation in their e-portfolio. Students develop reflective abilities on their practice in the six competencies during the teaching practice placement, and gather artifacts exemplifying best practice for presentation in an e-portfolio.

EPC 4909 Practicum 4b (Internship) (0-4-9)

Consolidates the application of reflective practice in teaching during a 35-40 day internship. Builds on work started in Practicum 4a through the completion of a professional development plan, an e-portfolio and an action research project. Students plan, deliver and reflect with increased autonomy, for a minimum of 60% of the school mentor’s teaching time, culminating in two full weeks of teaching, taking on the full responsibility of the school mentor.
