Program Description

The Level 5 Diploma for Advanced Emergency Medical Technician program is a two-year diploma degree preparing graduates for a career in pre-hospital emergency medical care in a variety of environments such as ambulance services, remote medics or off-shore medical facilities/clinics. Students will develop knowledge of anatomy & physiology, communication, ethics & professional practice and emergency medical care theory and practical covering pre-hospital trauma and medical emergencies across the life-span, up to a paramedic level. The program promotes the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, social responsibility, and a commitment to lifelong learning. The program offers students the opportunity to train in the field and experience hands-on patient care to be prepared for their professional career.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge, psychomotor skills and technology through skills based training and simulation to provide safe, responsible and quality patient care in the pre-hospital setting at a paramedic level.
  2. Use internationally aligned evidence based approaches to provide safe, responsible and quality patient care in the pre-hospital setting in accordance with the Paramedic Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG).
  3. Demonstrate effective communication, respect and accountability to manage emergency medical and trauma situations for all patient populations.
  4. Demonstrate competency in technical leadership skills to be able to lead and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  5. Participate in lifelong learning as a reflective practitioner to improve clinical practice and enhance the pre-hospital emergency medical care profession.
  6. Apply entrepreneurship and innovation skills to identify and contribute to potential solutions for emerging complex healthcare challenges in the pre-hospital environment.
